Red Cross Gives Tips on Severe Weather Threat  Download Free Tornado App

Mississippi is prone to severe thunderstorms and tornadoes, and the American Red Cross urges residents to take steps now to stay safer when severe weather threatens.
 
“After recent severe weather and tornadoes across several states, this is the time to stop what you’re doing and make sure you and your family are prepared," said Don Stephens, emergency services director. “Create a disaster preparedness plan now before our community is threatened by high winds, hail, lightning and excessive rainfall.”
 

Volunteers Needed for Society of American Travel Writers Conference

The Mississippi Gulf Coast Convention & Visitors Bureau (CVB) is organizing volunteers for the Society of American Travel Writers (SATW) conference that will be hosted on the Mississippi Gulf Coast from October 20-25, 2013.  With over 300 attendees expected, numerous volunteers are needed for tasks such as helping with tours, working in the media room, and greeting guests at events.

Governor signs child abuse bill

Governor Phil Bryant signed into law HB 1259, also known as the Lonnie Smith Act, which will reform Felony Child Abuse in Mississippi. 

The bill addresses both the legal and medical definitions of child abuse and takes a stair-step approach to penalizing those found in violation of the law. 

Under the old law, language is vague and fails to accommodate the language used by physicians who treat victims of child abuse, which has made it difficult for Mississippi prosecutors to hold accountable those who abuse children. 

Free rapid HIV testing for the public on Feb. 7

In observance of National Black HIV AIDS Awareness Day (NBHAAD), the South Mississippi AIDS Task Force (SMATF) will offer free rapid HIV testing to the public from 9am-12pm and from 2pm-5pm Thursday, February 7 at its office located at 2756 Fernwood Road in Biloxi. Ten-dollar ($10) Wal-Mart gift cards will be issued to the first 65 “first time” testers.

National Black HIV AIDS Awareness Day is an initiative that was established thirteen years ago by the Center for Disease Control (CDC) and their partnerships with various community-based organizations.

MS recieves high marks for emergency preparedness

The Mississippi State Department of Health (MSDH) has received an eight out of 10 possible points in the Robert Wood Johnson’s Trust for America’s Health report released today.  Mississippi is one of only five states to receive eight out of 10 points. Other states to receive this high rank include: Maryland, North Carolina, Vermont and Wisconsin.

According to the report, Mississippi gets strong marks in public health laboratory readiness, community resiliency, emergency management, infection control and response readiness.
